Description
ca. 1976 Mason Pumper. Mason & Philip Mason Fire Engine Makers. Richard Mason was a carpenter by trade and belonged to the Northern Liberty Fire Co. in Philadelphia. He manufactured hand engines from 1768 to 1801. The Mason form was located at #20 Strawberry St. in Philadelphia. His son Philip, also built fire engines at times separately from his father but of the same general, Philadelphia Single or Double Deck End Stroke design. He is known to have produced machines from 1795 to 1806.
The Masons built 120 engines of which 14 are known to exist.
Most Mason engines were located in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland area.
