Description
1931 Ahrens-Fox Service Ladder Truck. On june 20, 1931 this engine was shipped from the Ahrens-Fox factory in Cincinnati, Ohio to Worcester, Massachusetts for the purchase price of $10,000. It was used for 37 years by Ladder 10 until May 15, 1968, when it was taken out of service.
It eventually found a home at the Catskill, NY Fire Department and later on was relegated to a junkyard. There, Bruce Hertel of Saugerties bought it. Later Richard Sparrow and Carlton Willley purchased it. After the purchase, Sparrow and Willey began to resotore the apparatus to its original condition.
This engine, model N-S-444 is described as a 4-wheel service ladder truck and hose car with booster tank and small pump. The pump is located under the front seat. Ladder 10 carried 250' of 1" hose and 350' of 1 1/2 inch hose. The ladder rack had a full compliment of period, wooden truss style ladders in addition to the two original 55' and 45' bangor style with tormentor poles. The original headlights were replaced with period "Ryan" headlights, and the Ahrens-Fox bell purchased from the Detroit Fire Department. Richard Sparrow of East Syracuse donated this engine to the FASNY Museum in memory of his friend Carlton Willey.
