Description
1815 James Smith Hand Pumper wheel. Built by James Smith, who was a well know fire apparatus builder in the early 1800's, one of many such builders during that time. This pumper was hand pulled and hand pumped and needed 12 to 16 men to operate it.
Originally, this hand pumper was supplied with water by filling it with buckets. The suction equipment and hard suction hoses were added in 1819.
The center of the pumper would have held hose.
Two piston cylinders and an air chamber are located inside the pumper. They along with the handles, aided in pumping the water through the gooseneck nozzle, attached to the top of the condenser case.
The pumper is hand painted, but it is unknown if the art painted on the pumper are original. There is a brass plate attached to the front of the engine that reads, :John Carolan, Painter".
On display at FASNY Museum in Hudson, New York.
