Description
1812 "Old Skiver' Engine No. 39. This engine is a Gooseneck style of engine used in New York during the 1800's. This particular engine originally belonged to Good Intent Engine Company No. 39, which was organized on April 6, 1812. The company was later renamed Franklin Engine Company.
Because many members of the original company were butchers, the engine was nicknamed "Old Skiver". Sometime after 1844 the pumper was sold to the Newtown, Long Island Fire Department, where it remained in service until 1884. The engine is still in good working order and can throw a stream of water over one hundred feet.
It is on permanent display in Hudson, New York at the FASNY fire museum.
